Ceramic materials have been used for many years as an effective medium for retaining heat in electric radiators. Varying in both material and design, these cores can be made from a variety of cermics including basic clay tiles, fireclay (or chamotte as it’s known in Germany), soapstone, or even volcanic rock.
The ceramic core is used not only to retain and gradually release heat energy generated by the heating elements, but also as a means of tranferring the heat to the outer body of the radiator.
The quality, design and complexity of ceramic-core electric radiators varies considerably according to the price you pay. This is not always the case though, and some research can certainly pay off before you buy. Sometimes cheaply-produced models of very basic design are on sale at price points close to those of far higher-quality options.
Generally, low to mid-range models contain just one or two simple clay tiles with a heating element mounted below them. Others often feature clay tiles with heating elements either placed in between them, or pushed loosely through holes drilled through them.
The more sophisticated (and generally more effective) ceramic cores are found within German-made electric radiators. There are some exceptions to this rule, but in general, these cores include multiple fireclay ceramic plates with individually-imbedded elements. During manufacture, the fireclay is tightly compressed into a tablet shape around the heating element and then kiln-fired to a very high temperature. This manufacturing process ensures full contact between the heating element and the ceramic plate. Heat-transfer is faster and more efficient, heat is retained for longer, there is no drying effect on the heated environment or burning of dust particles, and the heating element lasts considerably longer.
